Sisters of Notre Dame Joyfully Sharing God's Goodness and Provident Care
SND Ministries SND Associates SND Vocation Partnership for Mission
Each day we invite you to read the Sunday Gospel, focusing on one aspect.

  1. Place yourself in an attitude of receptivity to the word that God wishes to reveal to you at this particular time.

  2.  Slow your mind, gradually becoming still inside and out. Sit in that stillness for a moment, being aware that God is as present as your every breath.

  3. Invite God into your life now.

  4. Read the Gospel slowly, preferably audibly.

  5. Select a day of the week from the list below.

  6.  Spend a few prayerful moments with the focus of that day.

    Sunday    Monday    Tuesday   Wednesday

Thursday    Friday     Saturday

Saturday

"Then he asked them, ‘Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?’ They were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?’"

What answer do you give to Jesus’ question, "Why are you terrified"?
How about his second question? How must you respond to that one?
Before Jesus’ face, ask him for deeper faith.

Heritage word—"Recall that in Jesus’ relationship with his apostles, they depended intensely and immensely on the Lord when they experienced their helplessness such as at sea in a storm."

(Sister Joan Marie, 9th Provincial of the Toledo Province)

Gospel for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time—Mark 5:21-43

"When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea.

One of the synagogue officials, names Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, ‘My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.’ He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him.

There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. She said, ‘If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.’ Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, ‘Who has touched my clothes?’ But his disciples said to Jesus, ‘You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’ And he looked around to see who had done it. The women, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.’

While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, ‘Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?’ Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, ‘Do not be afraid; just have faith.’

He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, ‘Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.’ And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha koum,’ which means, ‘Little girl, I say to you, arise!’ The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat."

To which healing are you drawn in this account?
What strikes you most in it?
Bring to Jesus today someone you know in need of healing.

Heritage word—"Christ our human brother became our sacrifice, and the Father in approval raised him from the dead—transformed him in the glory that was his life before the world began."

(Sister Mary Arthur, 7th Provincial of the Toledo Province)

Monday

"When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea."

Picture the scene described here.
What details do you notice?
Would you like to have been there? Why?/Why not?

Heritage word—"Try to grasp how important it is to be well formed. It is in the school of our good Jesus, meek and humble of heart, that we must learn all His lessons."

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

Tuesday

"One of the synagogue officials, names Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, ‘My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.’ He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him."

Enter into the official’s distress.
Notice Jesus’ response.
Hold before Jesus the sick and suffering who come to your mind and heart.
Do the same for any unexpected sick and suffering person you encounter today.

Heritage word—"If you give more love to some than others, then it must be to the poorest, the most neglected and abandoned—those for whom no one cares."

(Sister Mary Ignatia, Co-foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

Wednesday

"There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. The women, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.’"

Place yourself in as desperate a condition as the woman described here.
Have you ever felt so much in need of a healing?
Have you ever felt healed in some way by God?
What lasting impression of that gift has remained with you?
Live in gratitude today, encouraging a person who may be suffering.

Heritage word—"Our true availability is to let Him be available in us."

(Sister Mary Arthur, 7th Provincial of the Toledo Province)

Thursday

"While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, ‘Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?’ Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, ‘Do not be afraid; just have faith.’"

What impresses you about Jesus here in this circumstance?
How available do you feel Jesus is to you?
Ask for a deeper faith in the power of Jesus in your life.

Heritage word—"Draw great advantage from all trials. Nothing causes trees to be more strongly rooted than great winds."

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)

 Friday

"He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James."

Recall that these same three were invited to accompany Jesus up Mount Tabor where they "observed" the Transfiguration.
Recall a time when a friend invited you to dinner, a movie, a chat, or . . .
How did that make you feel?
Watch someone "light up" today when you invite him/her to dinner, a movie, a chat, or simply to share in one of your joys.

Heritage word—"Love the good God with all your heart and all your soul. Do everything out of love for Him."

(St. Julie Billiart, Spiritual Mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame)
